Hlocust

Road Marker

6.23.2023 The first Honey Locust arrived with the top snapped off. We planted it across the street in case it was stunted, but it’s doing alright so far. We received a replacement so planted that in the original desired location. Now the one in the front will be the golden marker that announces the garden.

In the yard, it will join the reds of the maple and yellows of the birch. It also is top heavy because what looks like a second tree is growing off the top. The fan-like leaves will provide decent shade, possibly before all my hair turns gray.

11.01.2023. Rutting season brought a young buck or two out to rattle the trees with their antlers. They gored the granny smith, gashed the entire side of the willow, and snapped the front honey locust. That was the end of the marker tree, sadly. Some time later, a month or two I think, I saw the buck dead on the side of the road, just a few houses down, near the base maintenance camp entrance. Don’t know if that was the one. But we ordered deer spray anyway.

4.27.2024. The honey locust was a slow starter, coasting slowly with the maple and both barely ahead of the oak. First the leaf buds grew like fuzzy green balls up and down the trunk and branches. The thin fan-like leaf patterns became visible in a few days and now they’re slowly peeling apart.
